Harvey Firestone started the Firestone tires company in the 1900s, as he saw a huge opportunity in supplying tires to the booming automotive sector and knew that there was a lot of money to be made. By becoming a producer of only automobile tires, Harvey wanted to cash in on the fantastic opportunity that this item presented to him and he put in a lot of his time and money to market his products. Firestone tires thus became one of the pioneers in the mass production of tires for the automotive sector and began to earn a lot of respect and appreciation due to the quality of their tires. The boom time in the tires industry was on and Harvey clinched the deal of his life when Firestone was selected by the Ford Motor Company to be their tire supplier and this business relationship paved the way for many more such deals with other reputed auto companies making Firestone a well known name in this niche Many reputed automotive companies were the customers of Firestone and were purchasing their tires in thousands month on month and it was certainly astounding that in spite of possessing no technical familiarity  and awareness about a product like tires, Harvey had achieved tremendous success and Firestone was going from strength to strength.

History

It was Firestone which provided jobs to many in Akron, Ohio and gave them the chance to fend for themselves with the salary they got in working for Firestone and this meant that they could aspire to purchase things they always wanted, but could not due to paucity of funds. After America, it was the turn of Canada for Firestone, which ventured into Ontario to establish its brand and commenced production in the year 1922, while also making the Old fire brand of tires named after the racecar driver Barney Oldfield renowned in this period.

Setback Faced

Firestone had to undergo a severe dent in its image in October 1978, when some vehicle accidents caused the deaths of 34 persons and the reason was touted to be the bad quality of Firestone tires. The court penalized Firestone to the tune of $500,000 and also forced it to fetch back over 7 million tires of the 500 series making it the most severe penalty in the history of America. Dropping sales of its tires and the requirement to straighten out the various lawsuits took its toll on the company and its employees.
